From “Unknown Chaplin”, the documentary by Kevin Brownlow & David Gill, 1983, voiceover narration by James Mason.

This excerpt shows Chaplin in a Douglas Fairbanks home movie. There is also footage showing Chaplin guest conducting the Abe Lyman orchestra (the tune is called “With you, dear, in Bombay”) and performing various tricks at parties, including the famous dance of the rolls.

Illustrations for the band ‘The Damn Jammage’ - ‘Well Hanged’

‘The Damn Jammages’ first EP is going to be called ‘Well Hanged’ and I was asked to do some drawings for it. After filling my sketchbook full of drawings of people getting hung, I finally chose to send off this one. I have yet to see what they have done for it yet, but it has so far appeared on flyer’s and at the end of the brilliant video for the bands single ‘Stockpiling Poison’ found here -

“Horton Hears a Who!”

Just watched ‘Horton Hears a Who!’ an animation from the creators of ‘Ice Age’. A lot of reviews I read about it said that before they watched this they did not realize it would be so good, and I had the same impression. It was brilliant. The animation was superb, especially the town of  ’Whoville’. A wonderful rendition of Dr. Seuss’s story and illustrations, it made me want to look at more Dr. Seuss books!

Tron

Tron is a brilliant film from the 1980s that pushed the boundaries of visual effects at that time. I love how old films are so creative with their capabilities, squeezing as much as they can out of what now seems limited in comparison to what we can do with visual effects. Sometimes, when you can see the boundaries of what you can do, you are more likely push them and sometimes this can result in much more creative and interesting results. I enjoy the idea of taking a small or basic element something and pushing as far as you can and seeing what you can do with it, I think that’s a lot of what being creative is about.  The visual aesthetic of the film also reminds me of Anthony Gormleys ‘Breathing Room’. http://samgallowayart.blogspot.com/2011/08/blog-post.html

Daniel Johnston is a massive inspiration

One of the best things to happen this year for me was discovering Daniel Johnston. He’s a singer / songwriter / artist who has quite a cult following and I regard him to be a massive inspiration. The majority of his albums were done on cassette tapes by himself in his bedroom/basement. He also draws cartoons and all his album art is done by him also. He never really got massively famous for his talent because he suffered from manic depression and became quite severely mentally ill, as is well documented in “The Devil and Daniel Johnston” film about him (see above). However, though he is not massively famous, he did get well known though word of mouth, and despite spending a massive amount of his life in mental hospital he produced a huge amount of incredible work before he was 25/26 and you can hear it all on Spotify or Youtube. Kurt Cobain was a big fan and made him quite famous by wearing the “Hi How Are You?” album t shirt (see above). Hes an incredible songwriter and generally an incredible artist, constantly producing work and drawing all the time, very inspirational to me.
