An art movement which has been particularly influential to me has been the Light and Space art movement. This movement addressed the phenomenon of perception with artists engaging in the use of light and space as a medium. James Turrell, Robert Irwin and Larry Bell are three key artists from this movement that I have been influenced from. Robert Irwin is particularly influential not only for his work but his writings on Conditional Art and theories of Quality. His focus was creating a work that was not separated from its surroundings and responded to a site or a set of conditions, making an argument of ‘quality being equal to quantity’ (these ideas also link with Zen theories). James Turrell is influential in addressing the qualities of light and its effect on perception. Larry Bell’s ‘Shadow Box’ series has been influential to my work with cubic forms and perception. His works can be appreciated as singular objects but at the same time respond to their surrounding environment.
